It has been kind of heavy weekend in our house.
Thursday was Halloween which, to put it simply, is not a holiday I enjoy. We got through that only to find out some of our dear friends are walking through a divorce. Sunday morning, we got news one of my family members passed away after a battle with Alzheimers. On top of it all, the election is looming.
To be honest, after the past few days, I have felt like division, death, and darkness have been winning.
But Sunday morning, we showed up to the church.
And as they preached on meeting God in our pain and suffering (how fitting), I was reminded that He sees us.
I was reminded that He is good, even when we struggle to believe it.
And I was reminded that He wins in the end.
My prayer this week:
“We’ve prayed our prayers, we’ve made our plans. If you’re not in it, we don’t want it. O God, would you move?
Only you can heal our land. Holy Spirit, come and fill us. O God, would you move?“
Now, we are walking into election week.
And whether you are feeling light and hopeful or heavy and doubtful, I wanted to offer you a few encouragements…
Vote! I know it can feel like your vote doesn’t count or sometimes that you are picking from bad and worst. But your vote does matter!!!
Be kind. The candidates and those on the opposite side as you are also humans made in the image of God. As believers, we are called to respond differently than the world.
Ask questions. You will likely have conversations or hear conversations this week surrounding the candidates, the election, the policies, etc. Instead of reacting in a combative or argumentative manner, simply ask questions. You can stand firm in your opinion and also seek to understand someone else’s more. And in doing so, you leave the door open for future conversation and connection.
Pray. In the same way that we sometimes are tempted to succumb to the lie that our votes don’t matter, we also fall victim to the lie that our prayers don’t either. But guess what? They matter. Pray for peace, for the candidates, for those you agree with & those you don’t.
Remember who is actually in control. Our elected officials matter. And I believe the person we vote for and the policies they choose to empower matter. But I think sometimes, we accidentally make a political party or leader our savior instead of Jesus. Set your mind on truth.
No matter what happens tomorrow (or early Wednesday morning), I know who sits on the throne.
I know who wins in the end.
I know that light is greater than darkness.
And that is my hope.
Not Kamala. Not Trump.
Only Jesus.
Praying for a week full of peace!
Take care,
Caroline
